BSG ficlet - Farewell
I haven't felt like writing BSG for a while, but it turned out the Leland issue was too tempting to resist...so I quickly knocked something together.

Title: Farewell
Characters: Lee, Kara
Spoilers: For 'Sine Qua Non'
Rating: General
Summary:  Lee's worried about his dad, and now Kara knows his real name...

Lee waited for the jump in Galactica’s observation lounge.  From that viewpoint his father’s raptor was only a tiny dot among the other ships, but his trained eyes easily picked it out.  He stood there in almost complete stillness, gaze tightly fixed.  He wanted to keep his father in sight as long as he possibly could.

He was so engrossed in his vigil that he didn’t even notice someone else entering the observation lounge until a familiar voice spoke beside him.

“I thought you said goodbye already.”  Kara was smiling, but her eyes still held the anxiety she’d shown on the flight deck.

“It’s tradition,” said Lee, smiling back.  “When I was a boy and he went back to the fleet, I always used to watch his car until it was out of sight.”  His breath skipped a little as it always did now whenever he saw her, in amazed gratitude that she was actually here, living and breathing, that he could talk to her and touch her again. Part of him – maybe most of him - still couldn’t quite believe it.  It was certainly something he’d never take for granted again.

Kara looked out of the window, quickly spotting the raptor.  “It’s good to keep up traditions.  Shall we see him off together?”

She sounded hesitant, so Lee responded quickly.  “Of course.  Unless you’re needed on the flight deck-”

“No.  I took care of everything I had to do there, so I thought I’d come and find you.”

Because I wanted to see if you were all right.  Lee knew what she meant, even if she didn’t actually say it, and it touched him, especially with everything else she had to deal with at the moment.

“How did you know I was here?” he asked.

Kara turned to look at him with a grin that was pure Starbuck.  “Well, the escort of marines waiting outside the hatch just might have given it away, Mr President.”

Lee flushed.  “I’m still not used to that yet.”  The constant shadow was definitely one of the downsides of his new position.  “I tried to argue that I’m quite capable of defending myself, but the Quorum insisted.”

Kara’s grin broadened.  “Do they follow you everywhere?”

“Kara.”

“Even into the head?”

Lee sent her a long-suffering look.  “Kara, try to remember you’re not twelve.”

“I’m so sorry, Mr President.”  Kara hung her head in mock embarrassment and Lee had to bite hard on his lip to keep from laughing.  “I stand rebuked.”

“Shut up, Starbuck.”  Lee happily played along with his role.  He’d missed her teasing him so much.

“Is that an official order, Mr President?”

“Kara, stop calling me that!”

Kara looked up at him, with a wicked expression on her face that told Lee he’d just walked right into a trap.  “I’m sorry.  Would you prefer Leland?”

Frak.  Okay, maybe he hadn’t missed her teasing all that much.

Lee braced himself.  “So you were listening to the ceremony.”  He’d been hoping vainly that she’d missed it.

“Of course I was!”  Kara looked indignant.  “I’m only sorry I couldn’t be there in person.”

“So you could tell me my fly was undone?”  Kara and official ceremonies were never a good combination.

“Unfair, Adama.  I never use the same joke twice.”

Lee grinned at the opportunities that little comment opened up.  “You want to bet on that?”

“No, no.”  Kara backed down rapidly.  “Anyway, stop trying to change the subject, Leland.”

Lee winced, and she laughed.  Gods, how he hated that name.

“How the hell did you manage to keep that quiet from me all these years anyway?”  Kara asked, with a note of respect.

“Stealth.  Guile.  Natural brilliance.”

“Pure dumb luck is more like it.  I can’t believe Zak never told me,” she said, sounding hurt.  “He was usually quick enough to dish the dirt on you.”

“I bribed him.  Must have cost me several hundred free shots of ambrosia over the years.”  Lee smiled reminiscently.  “Worth it though.”

“I’ll say.  I mean…Leland?  It sounds like an off-road vehicle.  Or a construction firm.  Why the hell did the Old Man saddle you with that?”

Lee’s gaze returned to the raptor.  “I must admit that’s one thing I can’t blame him for.  Mum picked it – it was her maiden name.  No-one’s ever called me that though.”

“Until now.”

Lee looked round warily to see Kara wearing her most evil grin.  “You dare,” he said, doing his best to sound threatening.

Kara chuckled.  He hadn’t seen her look this relaxed and happy, so like her old self, since she returned.  “Or you’ll do what?  How exactly are you going to stop me, Apollo?”

“I’m sure I’ll think of something,” Lee shot back, and for a moment it was as if they were really Apollo and Starbuck again.

The announcement to prepare for the jump interrupted Kara’s reply.  It was odd to hear Dee’s voice over the comms instead of Gaeta’s, and Lee made a mental note to stop by sick bay before he left Galactica.

“Time to go.”  He turned back to the window and his father, his fear and anxiety returning in full force.

“I tried to stop him, you know.”  The words spilled out of him abruptly.  “I said everything I could think of to convince him to stay.”

“I know you did.”  Kara’s voice was quiet, all teasing fled.  “But you couldn’t have stopped him, Lee.  We both know how stubborn he is.”

“We do.”  His voice shook slightly, and he felt Kara’s hand slip over his, clenched tight on the edge of the window.

“He’ll be all right, Lee.  The Old Man always comes through somehow.”

“You can’t know that.”

“No, but I believe it.”  Her voice held a serenity that startled him.  It was never a word that he’d associated with her before.  “He’ll come back, Lee.  After all, I did.”

I know.  And that was why he was so scared.  He’d already had one personal miracle; what right had he to another?  He couldn’t be so lucky twice.

He heard Dee start the countdown to the jump.

“Try to believe it, Lee.”  Kara's fingers tightened on his hand.  “I know it’s hard for you, but try.”

He didn’t believe it.  But he remembered what he’d said to Romo, about choosing to hope, so he turned his hand to grip hers.

“I can’t believe it, Kara.  But I have hope, and that’s enough.”

He felt the beginning of the jump, time starting to stretch, and Kara’s grasp anchored him as he kept his eyes fixed on the raptor until it disappeared from sight.

Oh, I so miss my piloticians! I do hope we get some of those scenes in canon, because hot damn, it's so good to read them.

Also, a little snogging wouldn't go amiss, imho.

Very nice, though... ;)

Yes, it would be nice to see them get some screen time again!
Glad you liked it. :)

Aw, this was sweet. I really enjoyed it!

I'm particularly amused that Kara never knew his full name--yes, I think she would have mocked him mercilessly if she'd known before.
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 11th, 2008 08:40 am (UTC)
Oh Kara would have definitely mocked him about 'Leland' - and I liked the idea that he'd spent years carefully hiding it from her. :) Glad you enjoyed this.

That was lovely. Just lovely. Enough teasing to be suggestive and bring my mind back to season 1 pilots, but not enough to undermine the seriousness of both Lee's relationship with her and with his father.

Well done! I really hope to see something like this in the next few episodes...
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 11th, 2008 08:40 am (UTC)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Let's hope they actually get a scene together in the remaining two episodes (haven't seen the Hub yet).

I have and they do. Won't spoil you any more than that. But I'm really hoping there will be more in the next episode - considering it's the last one before the 6 month hiatus.

Oh my! I *adore* this. :D

I love how you draw the connection of Lee seeing his father off between now and the old days. Nothing seems changed, yet everything has.

And of course I always love the way you write Kara. ;)

I'm happy to see Lee remembered poor Gaeta, and made a mental note to see him on his way out! Well done.

This is exactly what I needed. Thank you!

suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 11th, 2008 08:42 am (UTC)
Everyone should remember poor Gaeta. :) I'm very fond of his character.

I'm particularly glad you enjoyed this, as that conversation we had gave me the push to actually sit down and write this out.

yay!! I love it!
it was such a sweet and yet fun fic to read, just what I needed.
I really missed your fanfics, I love the way you write Kara and Lee, plus I must confess that the minute I heard Leland I thought "omg Kara will tease him so much for that" so I was very happy to read you wrote about it.
Plus I can imagine them leaving Adama behind and not looking for the other. She searching for him and him saying that he had hope it was perfect.
thanks :)

Thanks, I'm really pleased you enjoyed it. I haven't felt in a BSG writing mood recently, but like you when I heard Leland I thought about Kara teasing and had to write it.

Thanks so much, particularly for the comment about writing their season four selves - it is difficult for Kara especially. She has changed, but her on screen characterisation has been so up and down it's hard to know how.

And yes, i haven't forgotten Lee used to be a pilot! :)

I'm so glad to see you writing again.

This was a lovely story - I would have loved to have seen a scene like this on the show. How could Kara pass up teasing Lee about his 'real' name?
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 11th, 2008 05:52 pm (UTC)
Thanks, it's nice to be writing again. And even new resurrected Kara couldn't pass on that teasing opportunity, I felt. :)

Beautiful. Just beautiful. Reminds me of the old days when our pilots used to be so care free so to speak. They haven't forgotten their responsibilities but it is good to seem them laugh a little. Lately I have seen more Lee/Kara moments from fics then the show and I so glad to the authors of those it keeps me sane, like this. Thank you for making my morning. Great story

Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed reading this. I miss the more carefree pilots too, remember the old S1 days of water fights? :) Hopefully we'll see some more L/K moments on the show soon.

OH! Lovely lovely lovely.

Kara’s grasp anchored him

That gave me a little happy shiver. :)
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 11th, 2008 05:55 pm (UTC)
Thanks. :) Good to know my K/L groove is still there, so to speak!

Yay! It's nice seeing a fic from you, and what a nice little piece it is, too. I loved it; of course, Kara would tease poor Leland to death (though to be fair, the name doesn't bug me as much as it does some. But then, I'm not a native speaker, so that may be why).
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 11th, 2008 05:58 pm (UTC)
Thanks, it's good to write again. I haven't been in the BSG mood much lately, but finally something in an episode sparked an idea.

I don't know why I find Leland so funny. Probably because it's an odd name and to me it sounds a little pretentious. Plus I realised after writing this that I'm associating it with British Leyland, which is a lorry transport company. So yes definitely a cultural thing. :)

I enjoyed that. It was lovely. It was a good mix of humor and seriousness. I'm glad to see you are writing again! :)
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 11th, 2008 05:59 pm (UTC)
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was originally just going to be humorous, but seriousness crept in, so glad the mix worked for you.
thrace_adamathrace_adama on June 11th, 2008 02:54 am (UTC)
Thanks so much for writing and sharing this! I've loved catching up on all your BSG fics, and I was psyched to see this new addition.

I think this is the first fic I've read in which the "Leland" issue is addressed (though I'm hoping for more; it's just too cute), and I thought you dealt with it wonderfully. Your Kara and Lee are just so believable! Again, thanks for this.
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 11th, 2008 06:01 pm (UTC)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I don't write fic much any more but sometimes I get the inspiration.

I wasn't sure if there had been other Leland fics, having not had time to read any fic lately, so I'm glad to hear it's not already been overdone!

OMG! I read this when you first posted it and forgot to comment! Kudos to you and how this scene is like the one we got in Revelations! Wonderfully done, I miss your bsg fic!
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 20th, 2008 02:29 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much, I'm glad you liked it. Unfortunately I don't have the time for fic writing that I used to, but sometimes I can squeeze it in.

If only you were writing for the show!

That was lovely - thank you
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on June 21st, 2008 09:58 am (UTC)
There has definitely not been enough Lee & Kara scenes this season.

Thanks for commenting, glad you liked it.
