BSG please - I'm going around procrastinating instead of filling my fandom meme.

1. The first character I fell in love with:

Lee - what a surprise!

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:

Tigh has grown on me, especially since Ellen's death - which I would never have expected to find moving on their first introduction.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t:

Adama (although this may be the result of confusing writing for him in S3). In particular I hate the way he plays favourites with his crew, it's very emotionally manipulative. And he is a terrible father.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:

Hm...Helo. Okay, so he's a self-righteous idiot in S3, but I still can't hate him entirely.

5. The character I would shag anytime.

Lee, but only as a one night stand, I don't want to have to deal with all that emotional baggage!

5a) My favorite random visual of a character from this fandom? As an altenative to shagging, in my case an addition to.

I'm not a very visual person, so I'm going to pick music instead. I love the drum music over the space battle scenes in the mini. It's brilliant at upping the tension.

6. The character I'd want to be like:

Laura Roslin. If I was suddenly made President after a nuclear holocaust, I'd like to deal with it that well. :)

7. The character I'd slap:

Too many to count, as they all behave like idiots most of the time. Cally probably wins out however, for her constant whinging.

8. A pairing that I love:

Lee/Kara - yes, it's a total trainwreck, but it's fun to watch.

9. A pairing that I despise:

Tyrol/Cally - beating her up one minute, having his child the next, what??

10. Favorite character:

Lee. Because he's not the typical TV hero.

11. What are your five favorite things about your fandom?

a) The fanfic, provides hours of enjoyment.
b) The fact that I've met so many people through this fandom - the first one I've ever been involved in.
c) The picspams - always seem to be hilarious.
d) The meta - people write very insightful analysis.
can't think of a fifth.

12. What are your five least favorite things about your fandom?

a) People picking on Lee because then I have to write fic to defend him, LOL.
b) People ahving big arguments and forgetting it's just a TV show.

But I have learnt to stay away from sites like that.

13. Who are your five favorite characters?

Lee, Tyrol, Kara, Laura, Billy.

14. Who are your five least favorite characters?

Boomer, Athena, Cally, Anders, D'Anna.

15. What are your five favorite pairings?

Lee/Kara, Baltar/Six...actually that's about it, oh no, I liked Dee & Billy.

16. What are your five least favorite pairings?

Tyrol/Cally (for above reasons)
Kara/Leoben (just abusive and unpleasant)
Roslin/Adama (because it seems it's just been done because they're the two main older characters, I'm not convinced)
Lee/Dee (because the writers messed it up and ruined Dee's character in the process)
Helo/Athena (they bore me)

17. Which character are you most like?

None of them, thank god.

18. What is your deep, dark fandom secret?

I feel that BSG peaked at the end of S1/start of S2 Kobol arc and has been declining since then, I was particularly disappointed in S3. That said, I still enjoy watching it.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t:

Adama (although this may be the result of confusing writing for him in S3). In particular I hate the way he plays favourites with his crew, it's very emotionally manipulative. And he is a terrible father.

I totally agree with you, I think we are one of the few people who dislike Adama and I know is mostly about what happened in S3, but it's not only because of that. I wish he acted more like Lee's father than his CO or treat him like he treat other members of his crew.

What is your deep, dark fandom secret?

I feel that BSG peaked at the end of S1/start of S2 Kobol arc and has been declining since then, I was particularly disappointed in S3. That said, I still enjoy watching it.

Me too, I enjoy almost every epi of S1, I dislike a few epis of S2 and like only a few of S3. I really hope I enjoy almost every epi in S4. But like you said I still enjoy watching it more than any show on tv right now.
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on February 9th, 2008 07:46 pm (UTC)
Glad I'm not the only one who has problems with Adama. Agree that he treats Lee differently, holding him to a far stricter standard than he does other crew members (Tigh & Starbuck). I know it's probably because Lee's his son and he's avoiding accusations of favouritism by going in the other direction, but it still annoys me.

I do think BSg did better with the shorter length of S1 - the longer season resulted in a lot of filler episodes, IMO. But then in the UK, shorter series (usually 12 episodes at most) and therefore tighter storytelling are the norm, so maybe I notice the filler more.

How about Farscape?
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on January 31st, 2008 10:07 am (UTC)
Right, Farscape...

1. The first character I fell in love with:

Aeryn.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:

Crichton, actually. I found him very loud and annoying at first (like most of the other characters on the show did, LOL) but he grew on me. He's easier to like when he's a little mad, :)

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t:

Chiana. I never forgave her for cheating on D'Argo with his son.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:

Do people hate Rygel? Because I think he's great.

5. The character I would shag anytime.

Well it has to be Crichton, that black leather does work for him. :)

6. The character I'd want to be like:

I would like to be as calm as Zhaan. :)

7. The character I'd slap:

Jool. But then so does everyone on Moya.

8. A pairing that I love:

John/Aeryn. One of the few long-running TV relationships that was done well, it didn't get repetitive or boring!

9. A pairing that I despise:

D'Argo/Chiana. Was never going to work (but then I think it only started because neither had anyone else available).

10. Favorite character:

Aeryn. One of the really great female characters in TV sci-fi.

11. What are your five favorite things about your fandom?

I'm going to talk about the show as not involved in fandom:

1) Die Me Dichotomy. I watched it completely unspoiled and was totally shocked and blown away - 'what? they killed Aeryn?'. It was a very long wait till the next series! One of the best TV episodes ever for me.

2) The joke where Chiana and Jool have to use D'Argo's vomit to operate his ship - yes, I have a childish sense of humour.

3) The return to earth episodes. Very well done and so sad that Crichton gets home but doesn't fit in anymore.

4) The two Crichtons. Utterly mad idea but somehow they pulled it off.

5) I love the way the crew all argue and hate each other initially and only gradually become friends. Made a refreshing change from all those nice Star Trek people.

12. What are your five least favorite things about your fandom?

I can't really think of many, I love Farscape so much. Hm...the first season isn't very good, until the final episodes where John gets captured. And there are some stand-alone episodes that are unwatchable - the trouble with such bizarre plot ideas is that when they fail, they fail spectacularly.

13. Who are your five favorite characters?

Aeryn, John, Rygel, D'Argo, Noranti.

14. Who are your five least favorite characters?

Chiana, Jool, Crais, Sikozu, Jothee.

15. What are your five favorite pairings?

John/Aeryn...never really shipped any others.

16. What are your five least favorite pairings?

Anything with Aeryn & Crais always creeped me out.

17. Which character are you most like?

None of them, I hope!

18. What is your deep, dark fandom secret?

I watched the pilot and thought it was rubbish - didn't watch it again until I happened to catch a season 2 episode - the one with flashbacks to Aeryn's Peacekeeper life - and was hooked from then on.
helen_c: farscapehelen_c on January 31st, 2008 08:05 pm (UTC)
Jumping in to say,

He's easier to like when he's a little mad
Yes, yes, yes. I didn't like him much at first either, though I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's that we saw him in big part through the eyes of all the others, not through another human's eyes, and that changed things?

But yes, definitely more interesting when he was insane, which thankfully happened pretty early on.

that black leather does work for him.
Boy, does it ever...

3) The return to earth episodes. Very well done and so sad that Crichton gets home but doesn't fit in anymore.
I was so scared when they did these episodes, because I was sure that going back to Earth was never going to work out. I remember being impressed by the way they handled it.
I don't remember exactly what happened, though. I do remember John talking to his father before the wormhole closed, and hysterical interviews on TV, but that's about it. :D Can't wait until I reach the point (I'm midway through S2).

And I agree that most of S1 was awful. Back then, I started to watch, gave up after Jeremiah Crichton (because, you know, oh. my. god.), then read somewhere that the show got really good near the end of the season and gave it another try. Am I glad I did.

Interesting replies; thanks for sharing!
ez_as_piez_as_pi on February 5th, 2008 02:46 pm (UTC)
Heh... I think I'm almost in complete agreement...

I adore Aeryn... and John in leather, not much beats that...

I was very up and down watching season 1... the eps were inconsistent. I did love the three where John was made into a statue... and the one where Aeryn died.... killed me.

Yes, on two Crightons' that was the angstiest ever.

My favorite fun ep was where they were swapping bodies...

Buffy, or Angel, or the Buffyverse in general, please?
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on February 1st, 2008 09:59 am (UTC)
Sorry it took me a little while to get around to replying...

1. The first character I fell in love with:

Hard to remember, at first I don't think I preferred any one character in particular. Probably Angel, for purely superficial reasons. :)

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:

Xander. He's really been growing on me in this rewatch. And I find his arc of dealing with the fact that he's the only one in the group with no 'superpowers' interesting to watch.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t:

Willow. Not so much in the early seasons, but from S5 onwards she became so smug and conceited that I just can't stand her. I think it's also that her cuteness was okay on a young teenager, but just annoying as she got older.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:

Is there a character that everyone hates? They all have their fans...well maybe except Riley. He was boring but not that bad, and any new boyfriend of Buffy's was going to be disliked by fans.

5. The character I would shag anytime.

Probably Xander, actually. The safe option. :)

6. The character I'd want to be like:

Giles. I want his super research skills!

7. The character I'd slap:

Willow. For being smug.

8. A pairing that I love:

Have to go for Buffy/Angel - it doesn't grab me so much on rewatching, but on first watching the doomed romance sucked me in.

9. A pairing that I despise:

Buffy/Spike. I can see why they went there and it made sense, but it just wasn't for me.

10. Favorite character:

Well, it would be Giles, but in early seasons I get annoyed by all the English & librarian stereotypes used as shorthand for his character (since I am both). All that brown tweed would only be worn by someone a generation older than Giles is supposed to be!
Once they let Giles out of the tweed and into having an actual life and character, then it's him.
Before that, Cordelia - I like the way she starts as a superficial bitch and then develops layers.

11. What are your five favorite things about your fandom?

Doing the show instead of fandom..

1) Becoming. End of that episode still leaves me with damp eyes. It's the music.
2) The Gift. Ditto - it's the music again.
3) The way characters are properly developed and can change as to be almost unrecognisable.
4) The humour.
5)The musical episode.

12. What are your five least favorite things about your fandom?

1) Season 6. Too much angst!
2) Anya. Always felt like a Cordelia replacement to me rather than a character in her own right.
3) Beer Bad. Horrendous episode with annoying preaching about drinking.
4) The fact that anyone who has sex seems to have to be punished for it - the undertones make me uncomfortable.
5) The direction they took with Willow's character in later seasons.

13. Who are your five favorite characters?

Giles, Xander, Cordelia, Angel, Faith.

14. Who are your five least favorite characters?

Willow, Anya, Dawn, Riley, Drusilla.

15. What are your five favorite pairings?

Buffy/Angel, Willow/Oz, Xander/Cordelia, Giles/Jenny.

16. What are your five least favorite pairings?

Xander/Anya, Buffy/Spike, Buffy/Riley, Willow/Tara.

17. Which character are you most like?

I'd like to be like Giles.

18. What is your deep, dark fandom secret?

Probably hating Willow!

Actually this was all about Buffy wasn't it, & not Angel. I'll do a separate Angel post later.
helen_c: buffyhelen_c on February 1st, 2008 04:00 pm (UTC)
And I find his arc of dealing with the fact that he's the only one in the group with no 'superpowers' interesting to watch.
Xander is awesome.
:)
And in many ways, being the guy without superpowers may have made him even braver than the others, because he knew he only had himself to depend on...

from S5 onwards she became so smug and conceited that I just can't stand her.
I liked Willow mostly to the end, but yes, I liked her less at the end than in S2 and S3...

Giles. I want his super research skills!
I know exactly what you mean.
And he was funny, in an odd way -- "Look at my ritual mask. Isn't it beautiful. And guess what? It raises the dead!!! ... Americans!"

Before that, Cordelia - I like the way she starts as a superficial bitch and then develops layers.
Oh, yes! For all her whining every time something weird and dangerous happened, she still kept coming back for more...
And she kicked ass.

Too bad the character was litteraly slaughtered in the last seasons of Angel (though I liked her last episode).

5)The musical episode.
Words fail me to express how much I love that episode. :)

Thanks for your replies! This meme is loads of fun (but it does take time doing it...)

Words fail me to express how much I love that episode. :)

I must admit I have the CD of the soundtrack of the musical episode...yes, I was a major Buffy obsessive. :)

And he was funny, in an odd way -- "Look at my ritual mask. Isn't it beautiful. And guess what? It raises the dead!!! ... Americans!"

LOL, that was a good line. I also like the joke where Jenny takes him to the American football game and he's scoffing at them for putting on all that padding just to play rugby...so he does get a retort to all those jokes about tea and scones.
helen_c: buffyhelen_c on February 3rd, 2008 11:11 am (UTC)
I have the CD of the soundtrack of the musical episode...
Me too.

:)

The songs were wonderful in their own right (esp. I'm under your spell, and that one where Giles and Tara sing together).

olgao_yannik on February 4th, 2008 01:54 pm (UTC)
I second, because I've just found my LostLove again. They have A PLAN! obviously.
suffolkgirlsuffolkgirl on February 9th, 2008 02:56 pm (UTC)
Yes, I've just found my LostLove again too. Hope both requesters get this reply!

1. The first character I fell in love with:

Charlie. But then I’ve liked Dominic Monaghan for ages, pre-LOTR, when he was in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, LOL.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:

Hurley. Initially he just seemed to be comic relief, but he developed into one of my favourite characters & one I really care about.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t:

Well, I hate Jack but then a lot of other people do too from what I’ve seen on the internet! I especially hate his flashbacks with his boring father issues (yes, I know this contradicts my Adama love, but they have interesting father-son issues).

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:

Well, I don’t know how many people hate him, but I love Sawyer. I’m a sucker for sarcastic one liners.

5. The character I would shag anytime.

Desmond. That accent outweighs the hair.

6. The character I'd want to be like:

Rose. Sensible woman.

7. The character I'd slap:

Oh, so many!! LOL. Everyone demonstrates pure idiocy so often! - well except Sayid, and they never listen to him.

8. A pairing that I love:

Jin/Sun – I really enjoy their flashbacks and how they have restored and strengthened their relationship on the island.

9. A pairing that I despise:

Sayid/Shannon – never made any sense to me. Seemed to just be shoved in so he could grieve for her.

10. Favorite character:

Sawyer makes me laugh the most, but I also love Charlie, Hurley, Sayid, Jin, Sun and Desmond.

11. What are your five favorite things about the show?

1) The twists – one of the few shows that can genuinely surprise me.
2) Jacob’s cabin – genuinely scary.
3) That they’re willing to kill off characters – even though not usually the ones I want killed – come back Eko & Charlie!
4) That we are finally getting some answers, even to random stuff like the polar bear
5) The Others book club! That amused me greatly.

12. What are your five least favorite things about the show?

1) That the characters never seem to share information about weird happenings. I read somewhere the writers don’t like info sharing scenes, but there are points where their omission is ridiculous, and you want to see how other characters react to an event.
2) Used to be the flashbacks – after the first season they were telling us little new about the characters (yes we know that Jack has daddy issues, Kate runs away, Sawyer betrays everyone and that Locke’s dad is a Bad Man) and just delayed the island story. But this has now been fixed with the flash forwards.
3) Jack’s flashbacks. So horrendous they needed their own category. Especially the one when he was in Thailand.
4) “Waaaaaaallllttttt!” – no I am not happy to hear Michael is coming back.
5) Used to be the mid season lull, which nearly made me stop watching several times – hopefully this will be fixed with shorter seasons.

13. Who are your five favorite characters?

Sawyer, Charlie, Sayid, Desmond, Hurley.

14. Who are your five least favorite characters?

Jack, Locke, Juliet, Claire, Kate.

15. What are your five favorite pairings?

Jin/Sun, Rose/Bernard, Kate/Sawyer, Hurley/Libby, Desmond/Penny

16. What are your five least favorite pairings?

Jack/Kate, Shannon/Sayid, Charlie/Claire.

17. Which character are you most like?

Hopefully none of them!

18. What is your deep, dark fandom secret?

I’ve nearly quit on the show twice, but then it pulls a great episode and lures me back…
olgao_yannik on February 11th, 2008 10:52 am (UTC)
I got it!

And lemme say: Desmond! The accent outweighs everything! :)
